Historically, tea's origins date back to around 2700 BC. It is thought to have first been discovered in the mountainous areas of China’s far western Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. It was first used by the Chinese as a medicine to counter poisons and grew to great social prominence during the Tang (620-907 AD) and Sung (960-1279 AD) Dynasties.
In addition to tea's attributed health benefits, the high level of “tea culture” was appealing to people outside of China as well. Since the fifth century AD, tea has been exported by land and sea throughout Asia and it reached Europe in 1610. It was Dutch traders that first brought tea to Europe but it was the British who developed it most. They transplanted it to India in the early 1800’s.
Tea is a natural drink and contains a rich quantity of vitamins A,C,E and B complexes and research has shown that it has many health benefits.
In this age of artificial and synthetic additives, tea is a natural, refreshing and healthy daily drink. For the last 15 years, society has focused predominantly on the coffee culture with many coffee houses opening up across the globe- from the Great Wall of China to the Pyramids of Egypt. Now people are turning back to more natural and organic things. Recent studies into green tea have shown it to have enormous health benefits. With more exotic teas being exported out of the East, teashops and specialised tea cafes have been springing up everywhere.
